Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) was established through an Act of Parliament in 2006 as the seventh (7th) public university in Kenya. Prior to this, it was a constituent University College of Moi University which developed from a Community tertiary College -Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO). The University started with two Schools (Education and Science) and these have since grown to 10 schools as at 2017. The student’s population has also grown to ……….by 2016. This growth in enrolment is attributed to its bias towards community and market driven courses such as engineering, education, business, applied sciences, nursing, nutrition and allied health sciences.
In a systematic response to this growth, the university embarked on expanding its capacity in infrastructure and staff training. Several tuitions blocks, student hostels, an ultra- modern library and a science complex have been constructed and the anatomy lab and school of medicine tuition block are being finalised. This development has been made possible with resources from income generation activities (IGA) and disbursement from Government of Kenya. However the development in infrastructure has been slow and this has forced the management to consider alternative sources of income. Some of the alternative options include the use of grant proposal writing, public private sector partnership, public – public sector arrangements and a deliberate expansion of income generating activities.
The Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology (MMUST) proposed to start the MMUST School of Heath Science and Human Medicine in it 2nd edition 2006/07 to 2011/12 strategic plan. The School was designed to meet the growing needs, devise and implement better and less costly systems for the delivery of health care, to innovate and apply more effective means of preventing illness, disability and premature death, and to improve and restore the environment. This lead to the formation of School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2012, School of Public Health in 2014 `and later the School of Medicine that was formed in 2015. An Executive Dean for the School of Medicine was appointed in 2015 to help Operationalize the school.
